Waylon’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of second chances. As a young person with Autism, Waylon faced unique challenges in the traditional high school setting. Unfortunately, due to the negligence of the system that was supposed to support him, he slipped through the cracks and ultimately dropped out. The experience left him disheartened and stripped of the confidence he once had in his ability to learn and succeed.
But Waylon’s story didn’t end there.
Together with his mother Erica, Waylon discovered the Preston County Adult Education Program and the YouthReady Program—a turning point that would change his life. With the support and encouragement of the YouthReady staff, Waylon began to rebuild not only his academic skills but also his belief in himself.
Despite having no formal accommodations, Waylon worked hard and successfully earned his GED through the Adult Education program. But he didn’t stop there. He went on to take the WorkKeys test and achieved a Platinum Certificate, an extraordinary accomplishment that earned him six college credit hours—a clear testament to his intelligence, perseverance, and potential.
Today, Waylon is looking ahead with renewed purpose. He is exploring enrollment in the Cyber Security training program at West Virginia Junior College, with dreams of building a career in a growing and in-demand field. What once seemed impossible is now within reach, thanks to his dedication and the unwavering support of his mother and the educators who believed in him.
Waylon’s story is a powerful reminder that every person deserves a path to success, and that with the right support, belief, and opportunity, anyone can overcome the past and forge a brighter future.
